years, but their
child’s education should not suffer. Whether it involves a hefty donation for
admission to reputable private schools, high fees, extra coaching costs or
maybe taking a loan for their children’s studies, they won’t mind sacrificing
their own dreams for their children’s education.
That’s why you can see the following news in the media “India now number 2 provider of overseas
students to the UK” and the total number of Indian domiciled students was
over 19,000 in 2005/06.7
“India is already number one in the world in sending
students to the United States for higher education”.8
Reasons why Indians
spend so much on their children:
The
major reason is of course attachment and love for their children. Parents in
India are ready to sacrifice their life in exchange for the pleasure they will
have when their children are well educated and enjoy a good social status.
Also,
for most of the middle class Indians, this is the only way to be able to come
out of a life of mediocrity especially now as the foreign companies are coming
to India, I can clearly see that salaries in India have gone up at least 200 to
400 % in the last four to five years, therefore justification for the education
expenses have become all the more relevant.
Point
to remember: Indian
people don’t hesitate to spend a major part of their income on their child’s
education if they can. They are even willing to take out loans, if that can
give their child a good education. You will see the continuous rise in number
of Indian students who are coming to study in the UK, US and Australia.
